Guggenheim Foundation receives grant from Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for Panza Collection Conservation Initiative

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation has received a major grant of $1.23 million from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to commence work on the Panza Collection Conservation Initiative, it was announced today by Richard Armstrong, Director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and Museum. The first phase of the Panza Collection Conservation Initiative is a three-year project supported by the Mellon Foundation to undertake a comprehensive evaluation of the Guggenheim’s Panza Collection of Minimalist, Post-Minimalist, and Conceptual works from the 1960s through the 1970s, focusing on the work of four key American masters represented in great depth in the collection: Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Bruce Nauman, and Lawrence Weiner.

Re: Contemplating the Void—Create Your Own Guggenheim Intervention

To celebrate the close of the Guggenheim’s 50th Anniversary year on May 14, 2010, the museum announces a new online competition inviting participants to reimagine the museum’s iconic rotunda and submit their ideas via the image-sharing site Flickr.

The competition, entitled Re: Contemplating the Void—Create Your Own Guggenheim Intervention, corresponds to the current exhibition Contemplating the Void: Interventions in the Guggenheim, in which the Guggenheim Museum invited nearly two hundred artists, architects, and designers to imagine their dream interventions in the rotunda space.

Pascale Marthine Tayou (*1967, Cameroon) works with sculptures and large-scale installations both within institutional and public spaces. His works incorporate all kinds of recycled and found material such as wood, plastic, metal, shredded paper and glass. In his installations Tayou also uses paintings and films to make complex juxtapositions of images and artifacts of urban refuse.

Born in 1983, Anna Molska graduated from the art academy in Warsaw two years ago and has already attracted great attention for her films. The films have an unusually distinctive visual poetry and are often highly suggestive. She consciously uses a visual language which alludes to the aesthetics and culture of the former East bloc. Above all, she draws on the manifestations of Russian abstract art from the beginning of the 20th century – Suprematism and Constructivism – which tried to embrace all aspects of life in their activities. The belief was that art should participate in the creation of society. Molska’s images are full of such echoes from the past, which are an important part of Poland’s history today.

60 Years of Beetle Bailey: A Tribute to Mort Walker

Beetle Bailey made his first appearance on Sept. 4, 1950 and today Mort Walker’s comic strip is enjoyed by more than 200 million readers daily in over 1,800 newspapers around the world. The Cartoon Art Museum is celebrating this milestone with the exhibition 60 Years of Beetle Bailey: A Tribute to Mort Walker. Brian Walker, who served as the curator of The Legacy of Mort Walker: 50 Years of Beetle Bailey at The International Museum of Cartoon Art in 2000, has selected the highlights from that historic retrospective for this exhibition.
