Vincent van Gogh: Self-Portrait at Norton Museum of Art (West Palm Beach, USA)

Vincent van Gogh: Self-Portrait
Norton Museum of Art
September 4, 2010 – February 8, 2011

The present Self-Portrait is one of the very last of no fewer than 36 which Van Gogh executed between his arrival in Paris and his suicide at the asylum in Saint-Rémy in July 1890. It seems to have been executed in a single sitting without later retouching. Van Gogh depicted himself at work, dressed in an artist’s smock with a palette and brushes in hand; he looks over his left shoulder (as if at the viewer) with an aspect of intense seriousness and self-scrutiny.

Hannes Schmid at Fotostiftung Schweiz (Zurich, Swiss)

Hannes Schmid – Never Look Back
Fotostiftung Schweiz
12 June to 19 September 2010

The cowboy-hero riding across the apparently endless prairie and never looking back is a modern icon decisively shaped by photographic images – as for example in the legendary Marlboro advertising campaign. The Swiss photographer Hannes Schmid took countless photographs for that campaign. Disseminated worldwide on ads and posters, they have repeatedly inspired our visions of freedom and adventure. What is the secret behind the success of this figure? How do you create images so striking that they enter our collective memory?

Nabeshima Ware-Designs that Inspire Pride at Suntory Museum of Art (Tokyo, Japan)

Nabeshima Ware-Designs that Inspire Pride
Suntory Museum of Art
11 August – 11 October 2010

The Nabeshima kiln, run by the Nabeshima family for Kyushu’s Saga Clan, was Japan’s preeminent kiln in the service of a feudal domain, producing ceramic work for more than 200 years during the Edo period. Its high quality tableware, which was presented as gifts to the Tokugawa Shogunate household and to feudal lords, consisted primarily of blue-on-white underglaze porcelains, stylish overglaze polychrome enamels, and Celadon ware; these still charm viewers today with their elegant, attractive designs. The pieces produced, whilst continually striving for novel designs, always retained the sense of nobility and clarity associated with Nabeshima.
