A wide-ranging survey of the work of the distinguished artist Barrie Cooke, organised to mark his 80th birthday, opens to the public at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) on Wednesday 15 June 2011. Entitled simply Barrie Cooke, the exhibition comprises some 70 paintings and sculptures, from the Sheila-Na-Gig images and the Perspex bone boxes of the 1960s and 1970s to the nudes which have formed a constant mode of expression in his practice. Works are drawn from the Museum’s own significant holding of Cooke’s oeuvre, as well as from public and private collections.

Paint Torch sculpture of Claes Oldenburg will be installed in Lenfest Plaza, Philadelphia

In late August, a towering 53-foot high sculpture of a paintbrush with illuminated bristles created by world-renowned American artist Claes Oldenburg will travel across the country to its permanent home in Philadelphia. The sculpture, titled Paint Torch, will be installed on the grounds of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts’ (PAFA) new Lenfest Plaza at a daring 60-degree angle, as if in the act of painting. A 6-foot high glob of paint will appear beside it on the ground and the illuminated tip of the brush will light up at night.
