Charles Seliger

Seeing the World Within: Charles Seliger in the 1940s
Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice

This exhibition brings to Venice and to Italy for the first time a corpus of works—thirty‐three paintings and drawings—by American Surrealist painter, Charles Seliger (1926‐2009), working in the 1940s, the beginning of his career, that trace his rapid development from youthful enthusiasm and talent to a mature artist, confident in his own, original artistic vision.

For his first solo American exhibition, Belgian artist Ives Maes explores the architecture of world’s fair sites as they look today in The Future of Yesterday: Photographs of Architectural Remains at World’s Fairs June 28–Sept. 9 in Bloch Lobby of The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City. In 16 dramatic photographic sculptures, Maes investigates the effect of time, place and context on the remains of these global events.

For the first time in the Öresund region, a rich selection of Irving Penn’s photographs from some of his most famous serial photography will be presented. His innovative fashion features, portraits and still-lifes made Irving Penn one of the leading photographers of our time. Spanning more than 60 years, his career is characterised by a cool, minimalist approach to the medium. With a selection of nearly 90 works and samples from his assignments for numerous publications, the exhibition at Moderna Museet Malmö covers a broad spectrum of Irving Penn’s oeuvre.

Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2012 Designed by Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei

The Serpentine Gallery is proud to announce that Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei will create the 2012 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion. It will be the twelfth commission in the Gallery’s annual series, the world’s first and most ambitious architectural programme of its kind.

The design team responsible for the celebrated Beijing National Stadium, which was built for the 2008 Olympic Games, comes together again in London in 2012 for the Serpentine’s acclaimed annual commission, being presented as part of the London 2012 Festival, the culmination of the Cultural Olympiad. The Pavilion is Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei’s first collaborative built structure in the UK.

Yoko Ono

Yoko Ono: Grapefruit

Yoko Ono is a pioneer of conceptualism and the international Fluxus movement, and has been sharing her message of peace and love with the world for nearly 60 years. The Moderna Museet exhibition highlights Yoko Ono’s book Grapefruit from 1964 and features selected instruction pieces that encourage new, imaginative ways of looking at life and creating art. For the exhibition Yoko Ono has made a new piece called Summer Dream and a new instruction piece, that some 20 artists have been invited to respond to. Moreover, Yoko Ono will realise two of her works together with the public on Djurgården in Stockholm during the full-moon night between 4 and 5 June.

Susie Cagle is a journalist and cartoonist living and working in Oakland. She has drawn true stories in comic books since 2008, including the Nine Gallons series on San Francisco food justice activism, published by Microcosm. Most recently she has been drawing a book about the Occupy movement; she has only been arrested twice while working on it.
