Up to the end of the 19th century in Saxony and Thuringia and other places a tradition of folk art practiced by disabled or discharged miners existed. These people constructed mechanical figures—referred to as »theatrum mundi«—that were exhibited at annual fairs. They became the stage for plays depicting natural catastrophes, battles, major world events, and for making up for lost jobs.

Ancient Chinese Masterworks Pair with Monumental Modern Landscape

February 8–April 28, 2013 An exhibition that juxtaposes thousand-year-old Chinese landscape paintings with the monumental landscapes of the living Chinese master Xu Longsen, Journey through Mountains and Rivers: Chinese Landscapes Ancient and Modern, opens on Feb. 8 at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City. The exhibition is a celebration of six treasured landscapes from the Nelson’s collection that have just received incredible critical and public acclaim in the exhibition Masterpieces of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy from American Collections presented at the Shanghai Museum.

The exhibition, comprising 100 works of art from the late 1930s through the late 1990s, is entitled Chuck Jones: Drawing on Imagination—100 Years of an Animated Artist. Artwork for the exhibit is provided by the Chuck Jones Center for Creativity in Costa Mesa, CA.
