Charting the development of contemporary art in Japan through the years, the exhibition features thought-provoking works by artists who have made an indelible impact in contemporary Japanese art, including major names such as Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami and Yoshitomo Nara as well as rising stars including Kiichiro Adachi and Haruka Kojin.

Fia Backström & Andreas Eriksson for Sweden in the Nordic Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2011

The partnership between the three nations sharing the Nordic Pavilion in Venice – Sweden, Finland and Norway – will try a new concept for the next three biennials. The previous requirement that all three countries should be represented by artists will be set aside to enable solo exhibitions. Sweden, which is responsible for the Nordic Pavilion in 2011, will thus be presenting two separate projects.

The artists Fia Backström and Andreas Eriksson are currently producing new works for the Biennale. Once these projects have reached a more mature stage, they will be presented in a new press release.

Rafael Soriano: Other Worlds Within, a Sixty Year Retrospective

Cuban-born painter Rafael Soriano is one of the major Latin American artists of his generation. Soriano broke with regional and folkloric themes which once dominated Cuban art in the mid-twenties. Soriano first mastered geometric abstraction as a style in the 1950’s, but by the late 1960’s had defined his signature approach to painting. His work embodies a style best described as ‘Oneiric Luminism’ combining a purely abstract form of light, form space and shadow with an interest in poetic and metaphysical impulses.

Hans-Peter Feldmann wins eighth Biennial HUGO BOSS Prize

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and HUGO BOSS AG announced last night that German artist Hans-Peter Feldmann has been named the winner of THE HUGO BOSS PRIZE 2010. Feldmann is the eighth artist to win the biennial honor, which was established in 1996 to recognize significant achievement in contemporary art. The prize carries an award of $100,000 and is administered by the Guggenheim Foundation.
