Len Lye Centre (New Plymouth, New Zealand)

Crucial central government support announced today by the Minister for the Arts, Culture and Heritage the Hon. Christopher Finlayson is a critical step towards making the Len Lye Centre a reality.

Lance Girling-Butcher, New Plymouth District Councillor and Len Lye Committee Chairman, says the committee is delighted with the Minister’s announcement that the Len Lye Centre will receive support of $4 million over two years from the Government’s Regional Museums Policy for Capital Construction Costs.

This major survey exhibition covers every period of her career, revealing facets of the artist and her work that are often overlooked. The exhibition features painting, drawing, photography, textiles, video and sculpture, in works that are by turns tough, romantic, desperate, angry, funny and full of longing. Seldom-seen early works and recent large-scale installations are shown together with a new series of outdoor sculptures created especially for the Hayward Gallery.

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen has a unique collection of works by the Surrealists, including masterpieces by Dalí and Magritte. The work of George Condo (1957) has a surreal quality that complements this collection. The selection of works charts the artist’s development from 1983 to the present day. His paintings and sculptures explore the genre of portraiture, the human physiognomy and various ‘states of mind’.

His unorthodox, surrealistic, yet eerily beautiful images are now showcased in a new exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago. Ralph Eugene Meatyard: Dolls and Masks–on view July 2 through September 25, 2011, in Allerton Gallery 1 –presents more than 50 black-and-white works by one of the most enigmatic photographers of our time.

The photographic gaze into the horizon is the mirror for internal and external states and produces artistic interpretations and commentaries. As in other artistic genres, landscape in photography is interpreted through political and private gazes and the results go far beyond purely aesthetic experiences. Assembled from the collection of the Fotomuseum Winterthur, this exhibition shows how photographers since the mid-1960s have approached their imagery from a range of analytical and emotional standpoints.
