Picasso Black and White

Picasso Black and White
Guggenheim Museum

Surveying the Spanish master’s oeuvre from 1904 to 1971, Picasso Black and White examines the artist’s lifelong exploration of a black-and-white palette through some 110 paintings, sculptures, and works on paper. Picasso’s deceptively simple use of isolated black, white, and gray hues belies the extraordinary complexity and power of these expressive works, which purge color in order to highlight their formal structure.

A major survey exhibition of four decades of work by Jock McFadyen, the Scottishborn, East London-based painter, who in recent years has concentrated on powerful urban landscapes, is to be be held at The Fleming Collection at 13 Berkeley Street, London W1 from 17 July to 17 October 2012. The show’s title Made in Hackney reflects the fact that many of the pictures were painted in McFadyen’s studio in London Fields, Hackney regardless of whether they portray scenes in London, France or Scotland. “Most people think that the artist has to be there but any large painting by any artist must be done in a studio,” says McFadyen.

Explosion! Painting as action

Kazuo Shiraga painted with his feet, suspended by ropes above the canvas, Andy Warhol or his assistants urinated on the canvas, Shozo Shimamoto hurled paint-filled glass bottles at his paintings, and Niki de Saint Phalle fired a rifle at her panels that she had prepared with balloons of paint under layers of plaster. The major exhibition this summer, Explosion, features works by some 50 artists from the late 1940s to today.

This summer, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen will be exhibiting the enormous painting ‘Wohin wir uns wenden im Gewitter der Rosen, ist die Nacht mit Dornen erhellt’ (1998) by Anselm Kiefer. This piece is almost 4 metres high and 8 metres long and is being shown as part of the exhibition ‘The collection. German art from Kiefer to Henning’ which offers a cross section of German painting from the museum’s own collection, supplemented with several important works that are on long-term loan to the museum.

The Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Réunion des musées nationaux de France are presenting the exhibition Hopper to be shown first in Madrid then in Paris. It will bring together the largest and most ambitious selection of works by the US artist ever to be shown in Europe, with loans from major museums and institutions including the MoMA and the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia, in addition to various private collections and with a particularly generous loan from the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. The latter is sending 14 works from the Bequest of Josephine N. Hopper, the artist’s wife.

The Submarine Wharf in Rotterdam’s docklands is currently undergoing a true transformation. The construction of the various monumental sculptures that make up Sarkis’ installation ‘Ballads’, commissioned by Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and the Port of Rotterdam, is well under way. They include an 18-metre bell tower and a 16-meter lampshade in which a spotlight rises and falls to the rhythm of the artist’s breathing.

From June 8 to September 12, 2012, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum presents Art of Another Kind: International Abstraction and the Guggenheim, 1949–1960. Comprising approximately 100 works by nearly 70 artists, the exhibition explores international trends in abstraction in the decade before the Guggenheim’s iconic Frank Lloyd Wright–designed building opened in October 1959, when vanguard artists working in the United States and Europe pioneered such influential art forms as Abstract Expressionism, Cobra, and Art Informel.
