A magnificent portrait which is one of the last works from Rembrandt’s late career left in private hands will be one of the highlights of TEFAF Maastricht, the world’s most influential art and antiques fair. Portrait of a Man with Arms Akimbo will be exhibited by the leading international gallery Otto Naumann Ltd priced at US$47 million (£29.5 million). The great Dutchman’s brilliant use of light in the painting led Ernst van de Wetering, Chairman of the Rembrandt Research Project, to describe it as “one of Rembrandt’s masterpieces”. The 24th edition of The European Fine Art Fair will be held from 18-27 March 2011 at the MECC (Maastricht Exhibition and Congress Centre) in Maastricht in the southern Netherlands.
The inaugural edition of Art Stage Singapore, Asia’s premier international art fair, came to a close on Sunday, 16th January 2011. The four-day fair and VIP preview saw a total of 32,000 visitors attend the event which showcased quality contemporary artworks from 121 galleries representing 26 countries.
A 56-foot stainless steel sculpture of a tree by internationally acclaimed artist Roxy Paine will be permanently installed in the Kansas City Sculpture Park at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, beginning in early April. The tree was commissioned by Martin Friedman, Hall Family Foundation consultant for the Museum’s Sculpture Park for 20 years, and was funded by the foundation.
Art Stage Singapore, Asia’s premier international art fair focusing on the Asia Pacific art scene and market, makes its debut today. Adam Kennedy, a 23 year-old Glasgow-based artist who recently graduated from Edinburgh College of Art, has won the Aspect Prize, the most important award for Scottish artists. His success in winning one of Britain’s largest independently funded arts prizes was announced at a reception at The Fleming Collection, which has become an embassy for Scottish art in London, last night (Mon 10 January) by the leading Scottish actor Bill Paterson.
The Art Institute of Chicago is pleased to announce the appointment of Elizabeth Hurley as the museum’s new Vice President for Development, effective February 14, 2011. MAM’s 39th Benefit Art Auction exhibition features over 100 wonderful contemporary artists from near and far. The exhibition, with 26 pieces of Silent Auction artwork and 76 pieces of Live Auction artwork, represents a diverse spectrum of media from painting and drawing to ceramics and photography. It is an impressive survey of the best emerging and established contemporary art in our region. This is an exciting year for the auction exhibition.
