From Gaudí to Picasso: A Vibrant Journey Through Barcelona’s Modern Soul at Palazzo Albergati

Palazzo Albergati exhibition Palazzo Albergati exhibition BolognaStepping into Palazzo Albergati today felt like being handed the golden key to a secret chapter of European art history. As I attended the world-premiere presentation of From Gaudí to Picasso: Masterpieces from the Carmen Thyssen Collection, running from October 9, 2026, to March 29, 2027, I immediately realized this is not just another block-buster exhibition. It is an intimate, breathtaking voyage into the beating heart of a golden era.

Bringing together over 100 masterpieces—many of which have been lovingly kept in the private residences of Baroness Carmen Thyssen and are destined for the upcoming Museu Carmen Thyssen Barcelona—this exhibition is a revelation. Seeing works by giants like Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, and Salvador Dalí placed in direct, intimate dialogue with their mentors and rivals, such as Antoni Gaudí, Ramon Casas, and Santiago Rusiñol, completely shifted my perspective on how modern art was forged.

What struck me most as I wandered through the four meticulously curated sections was the sensory narrative of Barcelona at the turn of the century. From the gritty, beautiful realism of the late 19th-century industrial expansion to the dazzling, detail-obsessed explosion of Modernisme, the exhibition brilliantly captures a city reinventing itself. I found myself lingering particularly long in the rooms dedicated to the Noucentisme movement and the surrealist avant-gardes. The serene Mediterranean light captured by Joaquim Sunyer offers a mesmerizing counterbalance to the wild, subconscious-driven experiments of Dalí and Miró.

Furthermore, celebrating Antoni Gaudí during the centenary of his passing ($1926-2026$) adds a poignant, architectural depth to the paintings. Walking through these halls feels like breathing in the sea salt of the Mediterranean while listening to the distant, revolutionary hum of early trams and bohemian cafes.

If you are passionate about the roots of modern creativity, From Gaudí to Picasso is an unmissable pilgrimage. It is a stunning testament to how talent, rivalry, and visionary ambition can rewrite the rules of human imagination forever.

The exhibition is on view at Palazzo Albergati in Bologna until March 29, 2027. Highly recommended.
