In the late 1960s, the rejection of sociopolitical conservatism with its traditional genderand class-specific role models manifested itself in radical upheavals in the arts: unconventional thinkers began to break up and merge the hitherto strictly separated genres of art and architecture.
As early as the late nineteenth century, both Berlin and Vienna were considered as rising metropolises. Nevertheless they have always, to the very present, represented divergent models of identification and different cultural self-concepts. Whereas the mutual exchange between the two cosmopolitan cities has already been intensively explored in terms of literature, theatre, and music, the juxtaposition of developments in the visual art and an analysis of their correlations constitute a blind spot. From an art historical perspective, they have merely been recognised in the form of individual biographic studies.
The Museo Thyssen is presenting the first retrospective on Cézanne to be held in Spain in thirty years, following the one at the MEAC in 1984. The exhibition includes 58 works:
49 oils and 9 watercolours lent by museums and private collections around the world (including the USA, Australia and Japan), many not previously seen in Spain. They will be shown alongside nine works by artists such as Pissarro, Gauguin, Bernard, Derain, Braque, Dufy and Lhote.

Weems has long been acclaimed as one of the most eloquent and respected interpreters of African American experiences, and she continues to be an important influence for many young artists today. Featuring more than 120 works—primarily photographs, but also texts, videos, and an audio recording—as well as a range of related educational programs, this comprehensive survey offers an opportunity to experience the full breadth of the artist’s oeuvre and gain new insight into her practice.
