OpenArtCode Tokyo 2026

From 9 to 17 September 2026, a selection of 26 OpenArtCode artists will come together at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum for the sixth edition of OpenArtCode Tokyo, presented as part of the 52nd AJAC Exhibition.

The OpenArtCode artists will exhibit alongside artists participating in AJAC’s annual international exhibition. AJAC—All Nations & Japan Artists’ Cooperation—was founded in 1975 by contemporary artists committed to promoting artistic exchange across nationalities, cultures, ethnicities and genders. The association supports modern, independent and open forms of artistic expression.

OpenArtCode brings together internationally established artists whose work encompasses a wide range of media, techniques and creative approaches. United by a shared commitment to artistic dialogue across borders, its members have exhibited together at prestigious venues around the world, including the Grand Palais in Paris; the Auditorium Rainier III in Monaco; OXO Gallery on London’s South Bank; Pudong Library and CEIBS in Shanghai; Palazzo Cavalli Franchetti in Venice; Gare Maritime in Cannes and the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Florence. More recently, OpenArtCode presented an exhibition at the Royal Circle of Fine Arts in Barcelona.

Through its collaboration with AJAC, OpenArtCode will once again exhibit at the prestigious Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum. The museum is situated in Ueno Park, one of Tokyo’s foremost cultural districts and home to institutions including the Tokyo National Museum, the National Museum of Nature and Science and the National Museum of Western Art.

The inaugural edition of OpenArtCode Tokyo took place in 2016, when the group’s artists were invited to participate in the AJAC Exhibition by AJAC’s former president, Mr Fukaya. The invitation was made possible through the involvement of Japanese OpenArtCode artist Kensuke Shimizu, who also coordinates AJAC’s relationships with international artists.

The 2026 exhibition will mark the sixth edition of OpenArtCode Tokyo and will continue the group’s longstanding cultural and artistic exchange with AJAC and Japan.
