Contemporary Art at Planeta’s Ulmo Estate in Sambuca di Sicilia

At the Ulmo Estate owned by the Planeta family, located near Lake Arancio in Sambuca di Sicilia, a permanent exhibition route integrates contemporary art interventions within the winery’s historical and production spaces.

The Studiolo and the Work by Ignazio Martellaro

One of the central focus points of the interior exhibition path is the Studiolo, a room designed as a space for reading, reflection, and reference.

The primary structural and functional feature of this room is a combined table/bookcase piece created by Ignazio Martellaro. Martellaro’s work operates on the boundary between functional design and sculpture: the structure of the bookshelf and the tabletop merge through essential geometric forms and materials, forming a single volume that defines the architectural layout of the room.

The Viaggio in Sicilia 10 Project

Much of the artwork displayed across the estate stems from Viaggio in Sicilia (Journey to Sicily), a project now in its tenth edition. It functions as an itinerant artist residency where Italian and international artists are invited to travel through the Sicilian territory and create works inspired by the landscape, local history, and agricultural processes. The pieces produced over the course of the various editions are subsequently installed across the company’s different estates.

The Sculpture by Monira Al Qadiri

Located in the immediate vicinity of the Studiolo is a work by Kuwaiti artist Monira Al Qadiri, produced as part of the residency project.

Al Qadiri’s practice centers on themes of resource extraction, industrial archaeology, and the cultural transformations associated with oil and landscape. The placement of her sculpture next to the Studiolo introduces a formal and conceptual narrative that juxtaposes local agricultural tradition with a broader global perspective.
