Expressing Montana is an exhibit, hour-long Montana Public Radio special, and event that focuses on social, political, and environmental commentary –poets, songwriters, visual artists — from right to left, from folk to fine, from rural to urban.

Persistence in Clay: Contemporary Ceramics in Montana

Missoula Art Museum is excited to present Persistence in Clay: Contemporary Ceramics in Montana. While many regions of the country are known for their mastery of other mediums, in Montana, the ceramic arts are the touchstone of art and culture. This exhibition serves as a snap shot of the world class activity that is happening today in the state. The exhibition coincides with the Archie Bray Foundation’s 60th birthday and is intended to celebrate not only this milestone birthday, but the long-lived strength of the clay medium in the state of Montana. The professional artists in this exhibit are a selection of the many clay artists who are currently recognized leaders in their communities.

The videos presented, Holly Andres and Grace Carter’s Dandelion, and Gerd Aurell’s Montana is a Harsh Mistress, each tells a painful story but use different means of expression.

One of the great pride and joys of the Missoula Art Museum is our Contemporary American Indian Art Collection, a steadily growing group of artworks featuring some of our nation’s finest American Indian artists. The cornerstone of this collection is Jaune Quick-to-See Smith’s donation of a significant selection of prints from her extensive body of work, as well as those of other American Indian artists.

Cathryn Mallory at Missoula Art Museum

Cathryn Mallory expressed an interest in creating a body of work that would utilize the unique architectural elements of MAM’s Aresty Gallery and Travel Montana Lobby. The majority of the works in this exhibit are being created from fiber and metal to specifically address the architectural elements of the space. The atrium, different height levels in the gallery, and the opening at the top of the wall are all factors.

Phoebe Toland received her BFA from Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY, and her MFA from Montana State University in Bozeman, MT, and has been featured in solo and group exhibitions extensively throughout the region. Her first solo exhibition at MAM celebrates and draws attention to an exciting new body of work.

MAM’s 39th Benefit Art Auction

MAM’s 39th Benefit Art Auction exhibition features over 100 wonderful contemporary artists from near and far. The exhibition, with 26 pieces of Silent Auction artwork and 76 pieces of Live Auction artwork, represents a diverse spectrum of media from painting and drawing to ceramics and photography. It is an impressive survey of the best emerging and established contemporary art in our region. This is an exciting year for the auction exhibition.

Michael Sarich at MAM (Missoula, USA)

Michael Sarich: Hush & Babel

Recent works by Michael Sarich include paintings, ceramics, and large assembled puppets, all laced with his characteristic imagery and wry social commentaries. Some symbols, such as Mickey Mouse and the Virgin Mary, are employed as a way of commenting on commercialization and globalization while others, such as fish nets and beach balls, are plucked from personal events and experiences. Sarich utilizes painting, sculpture, and ceramics to present his work, but regardless of medium, drawing is ever-present and provides a foundation for his expression and storytelling.

Missoula Art Museum is thrilled to host Wolakota, a new exhibition featuring the enameled art glass mosaics of Angela Babby. The subject matter in these works includes a combination of floral designs and portraits of significant tribal influences and is made entirely from glass, mortar, and tile board. The ritual required to plan and execute the design, coupled with the resulting luminescence, places Babby amongst a very few artists in the region working with this medium and very unique practice.

From his high school days in Connecticut when he walked into his school’s newspaper pronouncing himself a photographer, through his early years in Montana, and onto the present, he has carried a camera, refining the craft of shutter speed and decisive moment.
