A major exhibition examining the development of modernity in 20th-century Ireland through the visual arts, and other art forms, opens to the public at the Irish Museum of Modern Art on Wednesday 20 October 2010. The Moderns: The Arts in Ireland from the 1900s to the 1970s is one of the most ambitious exhibitions ever undertaken by the Musuem, comprising some 250 works by more than 180 artists, writers, film-makers, architects, designers and composers.

Insidious. That’s the word to describe Canadian artist Jon Pylypchuk’s works and the way they insinuate themselves, with their benign appearance initially obscuring the seriousness of the subject matter. Our unease stems from the fact that he uses items we associate with childhood (figures, puppets, dolls) to tackle such complex topics as poverty and violence. From October 8, 2010 to January 2, 2011, the Musée d’art contemporain presents Jon Pylypchuk, a survey of the recent output, from 2006 to 2009, of this multidisciplinary artist who is equally at home in painting, sculpture, installation and video.

The Singapore Art Museum (SAM) is proud to present the first solo exhibition of a Thai artist, Natee Utarit entitled, Natee Utarit: After Painting. This extensive exhibition, which is sponsored by Credit Suisse AG as part of the Bank’s “Innovation in Art” series, is a mid-career survey of one of the leading figures in contemporary Thai painting. It marks Natee Utarit’s biggest solo show to date and his first museum retrospective. It has been made possible through the museum’s close ties with key local and overseas partners in both the public and private spheres.

Lewis Baltz (b.1945) is one of the most prominent representatives of the “New Topographics” movement, which changed the direction of American photography in the 1970s and has had a formative impact on every generation since. However, Baltz’s innovations began already in the 1960s. The Art Institute of Chicago has organized the first survey ever of Lewis Baltz’s inaugural body of work, the Prototypes (c. 1967-1973). The exhibition also puts on view for the first time in 12 years Ronde de Nuit, a monumental work of the early 1990s.

Titian and the Golden Age of Venetian Painting: Masterpieces from the National Galleries of Scotland

The High Museum of Art, in collaboration with the National Galleries of Scotland (NGS), will present an exhibition of 25 masterpieces of the Venetian Renaissance—12 paintings and 13 drawings—that will include two of the greatest paintings of the Italian Renaissance, Titian’s ―Diana and Actaeon‖ and ―Diana and Callisto‖ (1556–1559). The two monumental paintings have never before traveled to the United States. The exhibition will also include paintings by Tintoretto, Veronese and Lotto from the collection of the National Galleries. The High’s presentation of ―Titian and the Golden Age of Venetian Painting: Masterpieces from the National Galleries of Scotland‖ launches a new collaboration between the High and NGS, with additional exhibitions currently under development.

The Guggenheim and YouTube, in collaboration with HP and Intel, announced today the shortlist for YouTube Play. A Biennial of Creative Video. Selected from more than 23,000 submissions from 91 countries, the 125 shortlisted videos can now be seen on the YouTube Play channel at youtube.com/play and at kiosks in the Guggenheim museums in New York City, Berlin, Bilbao, and Venice.

This autumn at the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam the work of Gabriel Metsu (1629- 1667), one of the most influential Dutch genre painters of the 17th century, will be put back in the spotlight. Metsu’s paintings beautifully depict everyday life during the Golden Age, with scenes such as a young man writing a love letter, a kitchen maid peeling an apple and an old man raising a glass.

Whilst several major exhibitions have explored the propaganda imagery of Fascist Italy, art produced by those opposed to Mussolini and his regime has received surprisingly little attention in recent years. Against Mussolini brings together works produced in Italy and abroad throughout the Fascist era (1922-43), but focuses particularly on the period immediately after the dictator’s fall from power following Italy’s disastrous Second World War campaign.

Over the past 45 years, Richard Gray, one of America’s foremost modern and contemporary art dealers, and his wife, art historian and author Mary Lackritz Gray, have gathered a remarkable collection representing seven centuries of creativity. On September 25, 2010, the Art Institute of Chicago will present the first-ever exhibition of their collection. Gray Collection: Seven Centuries of Art, on view through January 2, 2011, in the Richard and Mary L. Gray Wing (Galleries 124-127) of the museum, features 121 works from the 15th through the 21st centuries–from Francesco Salviati through Vincent van Gogh and David Hockney–and includes a generous promised gift of nine works to the museum’s Department of Prints and Drawings.
