The Great Upheaval: Modern Art from the Guggenheim Collection, 1910–1918

When Vasily Kandinsky and Franz Marc formed the group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) in late 1911, the artists predicted a watershed in the arts, a große Umwälzung (great upheaval) that would radically challenge traditional artistic production. Tremendous creativity and innovation characterized the years leading up to World War I. European cities were evolving, and the artistic avant-garde likewise adapted and responded to twentieth-century modernity, from its spectacles and technological feats to the social fragmentation and alienation of the modern metropolis.

Navigating the transition from Abstract Expressionism to Pop Art, from Minimalism to Conceptual Art, she created a radical, overtly sexual, and aesthetically provocative body of work in a male-dominated art world.

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and HUGO BOSS AG announced last night that German artist Hans-Peter Feldmann has been named the winner of THE HUGO BOSS PRIZE 2010. Feldmann is the eighth artist to win the biennial honor, which was established in 1996 to recognize significant achievement in contemporary art. The prize carries an award of $100,000 and is administered by the Guggenheim Foundation.

Digital Art @Google announces the opening of Ancient Stories with Modern Technology, opening October 28 at Google NYC. The exhibition includes National Geographic explorer and photographer Chris Rainier, media artist and author Paul D. Miller (aka DJ Spooky) and media artist and speech recognition researcher for Google, Andrew Senior. The artists will be present for the public opening and talks at dates to be announced.
