A powerful image of the face of a 2,500-year-old Egyptian mummy at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art has been created by special agents/forensic artists from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), as unveiled today at the Museum.

Julián Zugazagoitia begins his post Wednesday, Sept. 1, as the fifth Director & CEO of The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. An international scholar, museum director and consultant, he has served for the past seven years as the Director/CEO of El Museo del Barrio in New York.

A groundbreaking visual examination of how African artists expressed the dynamic interactions between African cultures and Europeans and Westerners will open Sept. 25 at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Through African Eyes: The European in African Art, 1500–Present, on view through Jan. 9, 2011, will feature 95 works of art exploring 500 years of contact.

Vibrant and masterful mixed media works on paper by the artist Alfred Jacob Miller, depicting the American West inspired by a six-month expedition in 1837, will be on view in Romancing the West: Alfred Jacob Miller in the Bank of America Collection, an exhibition that opens this fall at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Mo., then travels to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and to the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 2011.

The artistry of Edward Steichen’s glamorous fashion photography will be on view in Edward Steichen–In High Fashion: The Condé Nast Years 1923-1937, at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art from May 15 to July 25. Steichen, who lived from 1879 to 1973, was one of the most prolific and influential figures in the history of photography, and the artistic achievement of his fashion photography has been generally underappreciated. This exhibition, which features more than 150 vintage prints drawn largely from the Condé Nast archive, offers visitors an intimate view of the fashions and leading cultural figures–actors, writers, politicians and other celebrities–of the 1920s and 30s.
